7 Ways to Use Essential Oils for a Healthier Home

It’s no secret that I love essential oils. After using natural remedies for a few years, I decided to give “therapeutic-grade” essential oils a shot since I’d heard such good things about them. One of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

7 Ways to Use Essential Oils for a Healthier Home

Fast-forward two years and I now use essential oils almost exclusively to keep my family healthy. Why? Because they’re powerful, simple to use and take up so little space.

If you’ve been interested in using essential oils but aren’t sure if they’re really that effective, check out these 7 ways they’ve helped me create a healthier home.

1. Germ Fighting

Many essential oils have powerful germ fighting capabilities. These oils can be diffused in the air to help purify your environment, added to homemade cleaners or even applied topically for things like athlete’s foot.

Certain oils are antibacterial, like:

  • Eucalyptus
  • Geranium
  • Lavender
  • Lemon
  • Melaleuca
  • Myrrh
  • Orange
  • Oregano
  • Peppermint

Other oils are antiviral, like:

  • Basil
  • Cassia
  • Cinnamon
  • Eucalyptus
  • Frankincense
  • Lemongrass
  • Marjoram
  • Melaleuca
  • Myrrh

Some are even antifungal, like:

  • Cinnamon
  • Clove
  • Melaleuca
  • On Guard
  • Oregano
  • Rosemary
  • Thyme

You can add certain oils to an all-purpose cleaner, apply them to the bottom of your feet, or diffuse them in the air to kill harmful pathogens in your home.

2. Calming

Do you have any idea how crazy four small kids can get on a bus? I’ll give you a hint – sometimes they are literally bouncing off the walls. That’s when I bust out certain oils and rub them on the bottoms of their feet (and mine). It’s usually one of these:

  • Vetiver
  • Lavender
  • Cedarwood
  • Serenity

At night, I also apply either serenity, cedarwood or lavender to the bottoms of our feet before bed (or all three if it’s been one of those days).

3. Stess-Reducing

As a recovering stress-ball, I’m pretty familiar with the negative effects of stress: weight gain, illness and depression being a few. Thankfully, essential oils have played a huge part in helping me reduce my stress level. My favorites are:

Typically, I rub a drop each of lavender and frankincense between the palm of my hands, inhale deeply a few times and then rub the oils on the back of my neck. I apply Balance in the mornings and as needed throughout the day. Elevation goes into my diffuser.

4. Hormone Balancing

Hormone imbalance is a growing problem thanks to chemically-laden foods and products people use on a regular basis that disrupt the endocrine system. The problem is being seen in men as well as women, particularly estrogen dominance. Thankfully, it can be remedied naturally by carefully selecting real food that’s free of additives and by making your own cleaning, bath and body products.

Creating a wellness routine helps, too. One that involves limited caffeine, reduced stress and plenty of sleep is crucial. Essential oils can help, too, and I love doTERRA‘s ClaryCalm blend designed specifically to help balance hormones. If you don’t have the blend, here’s what’s in it:

  •    Lavender
  •    Bergamot
  •    Roman Chamomile
  •    Cedarwood
  •    Ylang Ylang
  •    Geranium
  •    Fennel
  •    Carrot seed

  •    Vitex

I apply the blend to my chest, back of the neck or feet on a regular basis.

5. Pest Repelling

You only need to smell commercial bug sprays to know that there’s stuff in there that’s not good for you. Thankfully, essential oils are excellent to use to repel pests that you don’t want around. Since there are a lot of different pests, there are also lots of essential oils you can use. Here are some suggestions from Everything Essential. You can see which oils to use for which pests here.

  • TerraShield
  • Peppermint
  • Rosemary
  • Purify
  • Lavender
  • Lemongrass
  • Rosemary

7. Natural Cleaning

You can use essential oils for so many cleaning needs. Certain oils are great for killing harmful germs you might have around your house. Others are great for cutting tough grease and getting stuck-on gunk off of surfaces. Here are my favorites:

  • Lemon
  • Wild Orange
  • Purify
  • Melaleuca
  • Eucalyptus
  • On Guard
  • Lavender
