In the last year, I’ve been reading a lot about the harmful effects dieting has on our bodies. And not just your typical, “I’m only eating grapefruit for the next month,” diet. I’m talking about restricting food groups, macronutrients and even just stressing about what you eat.
It can cause a lot of damage.
A couple of years ago, I went on the paleo-ish diet (there was still a fair amount of rice and potatoes involved). I lost over 30 pounds, the horrible rash I’d been dealing with started to fade and I felt awesome.
When my husband quit his job in October 2011, I got really stressed out. Reeeeeally stressed. Even though I’m glad he did it, I was stressing about money (which I now do a lot less of).
And I gained all of the weight back in about two weeks.
I kid you not. I’m blaming it on the stress hormones and seeking out a whole bunch of non-paleo foods for comfort.
As you can imagine, I was frustrated. None of my clothes fit. I was tired all the time. My moods were all over the place. I was a mess.
Because I felt so uncomfortable about my appearance.
I had felt so awesome before that October. I was active and actually enjoyed it. And my body was closer to the “ideal” that so many women aspire to. Knowing that in order to get healthy, I’d get farther away from my ideal, possibly forever, I just wasn’t sure I wanted to.
There, I said it.
I was willing to ignore my health so that I could look “good.” (It doesn’t help that when I gain weight it all goes to my stomach, making me look a few months pregnant.) I went back to restricting – grains, sugar, dairy – and there were days I’d cheat and feel so guilty about it. Only this time, the restricting didn’t work like it had before and I just felt worse.
Now, I’m working on nourishing my metabolism, so I can be healthy for real.
Are you nourishing your metabolism?
If you’re experiencing any of the following problems, it might be time to reevaluate your habits and make some changes to nourish your metabolism:
- Poor digestion (including symptoms like constipation and skin problems)
- Low body temperature
- Mood swings (like crazy PMS)
- Dull skin
- Poor sex drive
- Cold hands and feet/feeling cold all the time
Which is why I’m letting you know about The Nourished Metabolism by Elizabeth of The Nourished Life and giving you a chance to win a copy.
I’ve read a few books on correcting problems with your metabolism and I think this is one of the simplest plans to follow. (If you can call it a plan). Elizabeth lays out the building blocks for a healthy metabolism and what you need to do to get there.
Warning: There’s a lot of extra sleep involved. And butter. And self-care. Think you can handle it?
