Some years ago, I ventured into the world of minimalism and it affected every single part of my life. One area that’s been delightfully impacted has been my wardrobe.
Before, it was a cluttered mess. I bought clothes on a whim, often when they were on clearance. I hated the majority of what was in my closet and I felt oh-so-frumpy most of the time.
Thankfully, I was introduced to Project 333 by my friend and business partner a few years ago and I’ve been operating with a much smaller, intentionally cultivated wardrobe ever since. (I can’t tell you how helpful it was when we lived in the bus).
I’ve written about creating a capsule wardrobe a few times, including some advice on finding your style. I highly recommend those posts if you’re looking for some help/inspiration on how to actually pull together a wardrobe you love. But what does a capsule wardrobe look like?
I recently read a post that recommends the following items for a capsule wardrobe (I can’t for the life of me remember where I actually read it):
- 15 tops
- 9 bottoms
- 9 pairs of shoes
- 2 dresses
- 2 jackets
After I read that and counted my stuff, I realized that I’m a bit off.
Today, I want to share with you what’s actually in my wardrobe. Because, you know, a lot of you have asked and I’m a bit of a voyeur myself. No, not in that way. I guess I should say I’m a visual learner. When I hear about something interesting, it helps me so much more to see how it’s put into practice.
Everything in my wardrobe can be mixed and matched. Almost everything is either blue, grey or purple which I feel most comfy (and look best) in.
So, without further ado, here’s a look at what’s in my capsule wardrobe (including where I got it from):

I’ve also got some Tieks on my wishlist. (Update: I won these Tieks in a giveaway soon after I wrote these post and I LOVE them.)
Jewelry/Accessories
I wear a bit more jewelry than I did when I created my first capsule wardrobe (I still have a hard time believing it!) but it’s still very minimal:
- Stack of original bracelets from Pura Vida Bracelets in blues and purples (use code NINAN10 for 10% off)
- Two sets of surgical steel studs in my ears
- Essential oil diffuser necklaces – I have two
- Wedding band
- Either a nose stud or hoop
- An assortment of regular and infinity scarves from a number of different places
I’m finding that while I have fewer clothing options, I have more clothing that I love to wear, which has made such a big difference in my attitude toward my clothing. Before I felt frumpy, clueless and concerned about what I “should” be wearing.
Now I feel sexy, put-together and confident in my style. Such a good change.
I have tried to get here, but have lost my way….. what are the rules for areas that have drastic season changes? I’m from Wisconsin. And temps can range from waaaay below zero to waaaaay above a hundred.
And then the real hobble question – I have a few things from relatives that have passed. My intent is to someday turn them into a pillow, or similar, but every now and then it just feels cozy to put one of my dads flannels on or wear a sweater of my mommas…..
And then my closet is full again lol.
Oh yeah and PS… I am a nurse and I wear scrubs… so do those count?
Thank you!
